It’s autumn time and time to start thinking about what vegetable seeds to sow in Autumn. The days are getting shorter and the nights will start to get colder, so not everything will grow well. Autumn is a great time to sow some hardier vegetables that you can harvest either over the next few months, or next spring. Here’s everything I’m sowing at my allotment plot in the autumn time.

VEGETABLE SEEDS TO SOW IN AUTUMN

  • BROCCOLI – One of my favourites and happy to grow in some shade too.
  • CAULIFLOWER – I sow the all year round variety
  • KALE – Bit of an experiment for autumn. I’m sowing a dwarf variety for a pot.
  • ONIONS – Oh yes, time to start those onion sets, or try growing from seeds ready to plant out in spring.
  • GARLIC
  • KOHL RABI – Never managed to grow one, still trying!
  • CARROTS – These will be fleeced when the frosts come
  • POTATOES – I’m growing Maris piper and Charlotte for Xmas time!

There are lots more vegetable seeds you can sow in Autumn, but these are the ones that I want to eat. I think that’s a good rule of thumb, to only grow what you actually eat. For instance, this was the first year I didn’t grow spinach and I didn’t miss it one bit.

Lot of flowers can be started over the autumn time ready for next year. Of course spring bulbs can be planted directly into the ground anytime from October to January.

FLOWER SEEDS TO SOW IN THE AUTUMN

  • WALLFLOWERS
  • FORGET-ME-NOTS – Be warned the love to self seed everywhere!
  • PRIMULA
  • VIOLAS
  • SPRING FLOWERING BULBS

Are you planning on sowing any autumn vegetable seeds for your allotment garden this year?
