The autumn allotment garden is bursting with life this year and I couldn’t be happier about it. The success of my autumn allotment garden has been a little up and down this year. We had heatwaves, hurricane winds, the dries spring on record and now torrential rain and thunder. I think these changing weather patterns are just something we are all having to get used to and instead of moaning about them all the time (like I have been doing!) we should instead learn to adapt to them.
I hate saying that, but it’s a fact and therefore changing our response to it is probably the better move. However, despite all the drama this year, I have managed to grow a fair amount on my plot and the harvests have been pretty incredible. Compared to the allotment garden in July, I think you’ll agree it’s really thriving now!
Most excitedly, my pumpkin archway has finally kicked into gear and grown into a beauty! I did a grow along this year on my instagram and youtube, and if you’ve been following it you might be aware of my pumpkin drama earlier in the year.
Only one plant has managed to tangle itself over the rickety archway, but it’s providing an abundance of Jack-be-little pumpkins for me. I’ll be doing some posts later this month on how to cook with these delicious little pumpkins as well as some other fun ideas. They really are super cute and make great halloween decorations too!
The tomatoes have had the most success this year thanks to my new polytunnel. I’ve nicknamed it the tomato jungle, because they have grown like crazy and I’ve had trouble keeping them all standing! It seems I was a little naive with my flimsy bamboo canes!
I have so many jobs for the Autumn and I’m really inspired to get started with them all. Firstly, I’ll be planting more into my polytunnel over the Autumn to see what comes up and what doesn’t. I’ll also be re-doing the wildlife pond, planing it up with some new water plants and spring bulbs for early pollinators. Finally, I’m planning to completely re-do my strawberry bed which has been such a pain recently with more weeds deciding to call it home. I’m going to place weed membrane down and then cut holes into it to plant the strawberries in the hope that keeps the weeds down a bit as well as the slugs more easily seen and caught!
How have your allotment plots faired this year? Do you have any bit projects for the Autumn months? Let me know in the comments.
