When it comes to gardening jobs to do in April I have you covered. April is a fantastic month for gardeners thank’s to the longer because of the warmer days. The garden is finally waking up again after the long, bleak winter months and we are all ready to get out there and get our hands back into the soil!

There are lot of gardening jobs to do in April. April is a busy month of seed sowing, preparing the soil and generally tidying up the garden ready for the summer. Lots of things can also be planted outside now, though may still need a little protecting from the chilly nights.

GARDENING JOBS TO DO IN APRIL

  1. Sow your seeds!

Lots of seeds can be started now including brassicas, squashes and tomatoes (if you haven’t started them already!) You can direct sow things too like carrots, parsnips, beetroot and sunflowers.

2. Pot things on

If you’ve already sown a bunch of seeds, your seedlings might be looking like they need pricking out and potting up now. That means they need a bigger home. Potting up is easy, just grab a container a little bigger than the one already in use, hold the seedling by the leaf and tease out with a lollipop stick. Place in it’s new pot and water well.

3. Prepare your soil

Now might be a good time to mulch if you haven’t already. This is particularly important if you are planning on growing hungry veg such as squashes or tomatoes because they like a rich soil. A good peat free compost or soil improver can help to add much needed nutrients to the soil before veg is ready to go in.

4. Start Dahlia tubers

If you like to take your dahlias out the ground at the end of every season, now is the time to start potting them up and letting them grow. Be sure to leave the pots in a place protected from frost, such as a greenhouse or a conservatory.

5. Plan some flowers

If you’re like me, you’re all about the spring flowers. But now that they are dying back, you might be left without any flowering plants! Pop to your local garden centre and pick up some cheap Pansys, violas and forget me nots. Then whack them in! The pollinators will thank you and you’ll love the fresh colour!

6. Keep mowing the lawn regularly.

Is there a right time to mow your lawn? The debate will always be ongoing I think! However, mowing will help to let light in keeping the grass nice and green for the summer but do try to leave a little patch long for wildlife to enjoy!

7. Give your shed or fence a fresh lick of paint!

As long as it is dry out, now is a good time for giving things a new lick of paint. You could paint your shed a fun colour, or touch up your fence! Your garden will look fresh and instantly cared for. The paint I use is Thorndown Paint. I love it, the colours are fun and it’s non-toxic too!

There are so many gardening jobs to do in April, but do remember that the nights can still be very cold. One year we even had snow in May! So protect your vulnerable plants and make sure to keep your eyes on the weather forecast for any crazy storms.

Happy gardening! Let me know what jobs you’re up to in the garden this April!
