It’s time to Get Dirty to Save Earth’s Skin!

Weleda says:

Soil, just like our skin, is a living and breathing ecosystem containing a quarter of all life on earth. Healthy soil creates healthy plants and is vital for everything from the food that we eat to the clothes we wear.

It is the living skin of our Earth, but a third of our precious soil is already degraded, with 24 billion tonnes lost every year to erosion alone, threatening habitats, plants, and wildlife. 2,700 billion tonnes of carbon are stored in the world’s soils – about three times as much as in the atmosphere. Yet in the UK, soil is being destroyed 10 times faster than it is being created.

For over 100 years Weleda has been committed to preserving soil health – reflected in our ingredient sourcing and soil-friendly biodynamic, regenerative growing methods – because without healthy soils we cannot tackle the crisis facing our planet today.

It’s never been more important to protect out soil, just like we protect our own skin. By making positive changes to the way we garden we can help the soil to be as healthy and biodiverse as possible.

It’s time to think about the way we garden. Here are some soil-friendly changes you can make today:

  • Choose peat free compost
  • Try no-dig beds by layering on instead of digging up
  • Plant for the insects. Choose insect friendly plants and plants that are good for pollinators
  • Don’t be so quick to tidy the garden in the winter. Let those insects find a bed!
  • Choose plant friendly products which are grown with minimal impact on the environment
