My new allotment plot has been taking shape and is now ready for spring planting. I can’t believe I actually made it in time for spring. I think I was fuelled by anxiety and a rush of determination that I simply can’t explain. however I did it, I did it!

The beds are in and I think I like where most of them are. I’ve worked hard to think about what I’ll plant in each one, but some of them might change after this season. Nothing is permanent at this allotment plot. Pathways are just groundsheets pinned down and covered in wood chip and beds haven’t been nailed together too tightly, so I can always pull them apart again.

I think the back of the plot is where I get most of the sun, so these beds might change over time to accommodate more crops. I love the archway and am enjoying the two blueberry bushes I’ve planted at each end of it as a sort of grand entranceway.

The awkward area around the apple tree has really taken shape and I’m surprised by how much I like it! It’s wild and quirky and it’s going to be really beautiful once the flowers get blooming.

I’ve left the trees and this has divided opinion online. Many people say I should chop them all down to get as much sun to the plot as possible. But they are an absolute haven for the birds that love to sit up there and eat the cherries, so I just can’t bring myself to rip them out! I’ve also grown pretty successfully on my original plot for a few years now and the shade has never really caused much of a problem.

The plot is looking alive and just so different from when I first took it on. I sometimes can’t quite believe how much I’ve done in a relatively short space of time.

Roll on the summer when the plot should be blooming! Watch this space and I’ll update you again soon!
