Just thought I would take this opportunity to plug my article which is in Kitchen Garden Magazine (April 2022 edition).
It’s all about weeds and our opinion of them. I had a lot of fun debating the definition of a weed and challenging our thoughts when it comes to our attitude towards them. I really enjoyed comparing weeds to understudies, patiently watching our flower ‘stars’ from afar, ready to take it’s place should it ever falter, or need a break from it’s role.
Do weeds have a place in our garden? The wildlife would certainly think so. Weeds are, after all, the easiest thing to grow in any garden. They pop up wherever they choose with no sowing required and absolutely flourish. They are natural competitors of the horticultural world, always willing to fight and hustle to survive, adapting to whatever terrain they find themselves in.
So perhaps, weeds need a little more love from us human gardeners? Perhaps weeds are simply misunderstood, destined to be loved by insects but loathed by humans for reasons they will never truly understand.
So the next time you see a weed poking precociously from the side of a brick wall, give it a little wave and remember, it’s worked it’s little butt off to be there!
Let me know if you pick up a copy of the magazine, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it!
